southern california beach retreats
southern california is pretty much the ideal place in my mind.
i grew up coming here often and grew to love the foggy mornings that
burn off and give way to bright, sunny beach days. i grew to love the smell
of sea salt that lingers in the air, the bougainvillea growing wild, and the
classic view of laguna beach from the cliffs above town. anyone who visits
laguna beach is instantly pulled into the charm and magic here. it’s relaxing,
beautiful, and hard not to love. it’s the ideal beach retreat in southern california.
i may have convinced you on laguna, but what about a place to stay?
after staying in all different spots in and around laguna from inns to rented
homes to big resorts and beach houses near newport, we’ve tried all different
accommodations & have some tips about great places to stay in this seaside town.
for this most recent visit we tried out two hotels under the same ownership:
one classy boutique hotel that is an iconic part of laguna beach, and one
brand new, more family-friendly hotel just down the pacific coast highway.
let’s start with the inn at laguna: this is the slightly higher end boutique hotel
perfect for a romantic getaway, girls weekend, or relaxed vacation in laguna.
the inn is decorated in what i’d call a classy beach theme: striped light blue
walls, retro beach pictures on the walls, big white umbrellas, you get the idea.
on the right was the view from our balcony. the best night’s sleep i ever get is
with a window open to the sound of the ocean, and that’s what you get here.
the pool is perched right above main beach with the perfect views, so it’s
an ideal place to enjoy the pool and then go down to the beach just steps away.
arguably our favorite part of the inn was the rooftop terrace with
a view covering the ocean and the lit up town at night. we enjoyed this
view and the nice heaters while playing games and relaxing at night.
now for a slightly more family-friendly and affordable option, we
went a few minutes down the PCH to the grand opening of the
laguna beach house. this is a fun and beachy atmosphere a little ways
off main beach but with great ocean views. surfboards hang above
all of the beds in the rooms, and it has a very clean and comfortable feel.
the rooms definitely remind you that you’re staying at the beach! ^^
we enjoyed the pool & hot tub at both hotels day and night.
the twinkly lights were obviously my favorite part!
we love laguna, and we will always return here.
