The night after my parents got home we had a Friday night
outing downtown to try the new Chile-Tepin I had heard
so much about! It was the perfect welcome home to all
of us, especially my parents who have gone without
real Mexican food living in Africa the last 3 years.
The best part is that this is such unique and
authentic Mexican. We all agreed it was
incredible and we will be back! It’s a fun
location too, in the old Crane building
downtown and perfect for dinner before
a Jazz game or event downtown!
You can see we went big and ordered both of the platter-type
dishes on the menu, both of which I’d fully recommend ordering.
They each serve 2 and we loved every bite of both.
This dish in the bowl is called “Molcajetes” and has the best
unique flavor from the green tomatillo sauce. I can still taste it!
That was my dad’s favorite and we all loved it, but even more I
loved the “Parrillada” platter. It’s what I’d order coming back:
It feeds 2 or more and has all the good stuff: carne asada,
shrimp, grilled chicken, and the yummiest taco/little quesadillas
with guac and beans and all the toppings to combine them all.
The rest of the menu has familiar basics and some other
unique dishes like mole, so you really can’t go wrong.
Best views out the window with downtown + those mountains…
…and best company! ^^
The restaurant is named after “the mother of all peppers,” chile-tepin.
This is what they look like — I wasn’t brave enough to try!
Put this place on your downtown list! I already can’t wait to go back.
So fun having these parents back in SLC, and
even better discovering how much has
changed in the 3 years they were gone!
It gets better each time I visit too…
and Chile-Tepin is at the top of
the list of new additions!
