a downton abbey village

i think it should be a rule that you can’t go to london without
taking some kind of side trip to the english countryside.
as incredible as london is, you don’t get the full picture
and charm without escaping for a breath of fresh air to
a smaller english town. it’s where some of my favorite UK
memories and experiences have been, with this most recent
one topping them all. though we had a very busy month
living in london this fall, i managed to squeeze one short
weekend away to the countryside. in this case, we headed
to the land of downton abbey (if you’re a fan of the show! :)
IMG_1261the reason this is downton land is that right in newbury is highclere castle –
AKA, downton abbey itself. the beautiful location is where the show is
filmed, but the actual castle is only open to the public a few days a year.
we knew ahead of time that it wouldn’t be open during our visit, but
we loved exploring the nearby towns where some things have been
filmed, and we hiked up beacon hill to glimpse it from afar. the good
news is, we fell absolutely in LOVE with the village and b&b that we stayed
in, so we full plan to return at christmas or easter one year to see the castle.
IMG_1241my next post will show the darling bed and breakfast we cozied up in here…
but for now, can we just take a moment to appreciate the charm of the countryside?
we tried to go on a run the first morning, and instead it turned into a long stroll
through the village taking a million photos and being won over by the charm.
so here you have dreamy photos of cottages, rosebushes, crunchy fall leaves,
and just the british countryside at its very best. not many words, mostly photos!
IMG_1242^^ poppy cottage. i think i’d like to live there!
IMG_1263the cutest caution signs i’ve ever seen ^^

chase was too busy with business school to dress up..
so i scrambled together a makeshift outfit to look like
anna from downton abbey..we were in the village after all!
so here is my embarrassing solo halloween pic for this year ^^

IMG_1198IMG_1199i truly could not control myself with taking photos here ..
and i still can’t with posting them! it was just too magical.
so there’s your (quite large) dose of the countryside!

I love Downton Abbey! I’m so jealous! I love these pictures and could understand why you couldn’t control yourself taking them.

When I came to England I spent about a day and a half in London and 3 days in an outside town called Cheltenham, I still wish I had gotten to see more of London, but the countryside is too adorable!

I toured Highclere Castle and a few years ago and absolutely loved it! The surrounding village was so cute!

This whole post reminds me of Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday. AKA the best Christmas movie ever!! This weekend trip looks amazing. hope you’re enjoying South Africa, emi!!

I went to Highclere Castle but didn’t actually go inside because I was going somewhere else and it was just a quick detour… When I came back to New Zealand I became friends with a girl who’s relative is buried there! Small world :)
I truly believe there is nothing more magical than an old English town. If you ever get to live in Poppy Cottage let me know and I’ll come stay! :)
